Curriculum Curriculum Intent Our curriculum has been designed to offer a broad and balanced experiential education for all our learners, from Early Years to the end of Key Stage 2. It is intended to build knowledge over time, with a wide variety of opportunities to know more, remember more and so achieve more. We are extremely proud of the curriculum which is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values to develop the hearts and minds of all our children. The uniqueness of every child is recognised and valued and we celebrate and develop the individual talents of our pupils. As such, our curriculum embraces the community from which it exists, recognising the varied backgrounds and experiences from which our children originate. Our Curriculum embraces the local community and setting. As such our children have many opportunities learn in their local environment, such as learning village history and geography, and the community is very involved in the school: we truly are at the heart of our community! Our excellent teaching team use engaging lessons combined with a wide range of reading materials to engage children and maximise learning for all. The curriculum is further enriched through the wide range of after-school club provision, sporting competitions and musical performances. All of the children have the opportunity to learn to play a range of musical instruments and many have individual music lessons or join the School Choir. The school has adopted a teaching for mastery approach for maths, using White Rose, which gives pupils a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. Whole class reading is just one way in which love of reading for life is promoted in school and we use Floppy’s Phonics reading scheme to support phonics teaching. We review our curriculum to enhance and improve it, and promote outdoor learning throughout the curriculum to capitalise on the children’s needs and the local environment in which they live. Trips and visits are carefully chosen to provide a richness of experiences across different subjects. Sheriffhales strives to give an excellent education underpinned by a broad, culturally rich and well planned curriculum to ensure that all pupils are well equipped for the next stages in their education. By the time the children leave for secondary school, they have grown their hearts and minds to be resilience, tolerant and eager learners who respect others and the world around them.
